Potato Pancakes
A delicious way to eat your potatoes!
Potato is eaten across the world in one way or the other. However, when it comes to potato pancakes, they are most common in European countries such as Austria, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, and Russia and go by many names. And they are also popular among Jewish cultures and the USA.
There are many ways to make potato pancakes. Adding other ingredients such as onion, milk, flour or eggs vary from country to country.
Some are flavored with grated garlic, herbs, or seasoning. Some like them flat & crispy while others prefer them meaty.
This is easy to make a basic potato pancake recipe. They are made from grated fresh potato, onion, egg, flour, and then seasoned with pepper/salt.
Potato Pancakes-Serving suggestion
Serving methods also vary from country to country. They can be served as a savory dish (sour cream, yogurt, cheese, savory sauce, or gravy) or they can be sweetened (apple sauce, cinnamon & sugar). But just plain potato pancakes are also delicious.
They are great as a tea time snack as well as a filling meal (breakfast, lunch, or even dinner). You can make sandwiches by placing them on buttered bread. You can also serve them as a side dish. Some may serve them in soup or with soup.
How to Make Potato Pancakes-Useful Tips
- Use a very fine grater to shred the potatoes as thin as possible so that they easily cook through.
- Alternate grating the potatoes and the onion to help keep the potatoes from browning.
- Remove as much liquid as you can out of the grated potatoes that you possibly can using a spoon. Or squeeze all the water out of the grated potatoes that you possibly can.
- The batter shouldn’t be too wet or too dry – you can add flour if it’s too wet but be sure to add only the minimum amount of flour.
- Be sure to fry them in a generous amount of oil until both sides become golden and crispy on the outside, soft and tender within. Add more oil to the pan as needed before cooking the next batch.
- Best served warm. Serve the pancakes as they are ready or keep them warm while you finish making all the batter.
