Colorful! Japanese Fruit Flower Sandwiches
WHAT IS A FRUIT Sando?
Fruit Sando (fruit sandwich) is a Japanese-style dessert sandwich made by simply sandwiching fresh seasonal fruits and whipped cream between slices of soft white bread known as shokupan. A variety of colorful combinations of fruits are arranged on the slightly sweetened whipped cream in a creative way to make a beautiful cross-section when the sandwich is cut in half.
Japanese soft white bread goes very well with the filling of fresh fruit and whipped cream and the tanginess and sweetness that come from the fruits are perfectly balanced out by the slightly sweetened whipped cream. You’ll find Fruit Sandos just about everywhere, including coffee shops, bakeries, supermarkets, and convenience stores.
Fancy dessert sandwiches!
These cute sandwiches are more of a dessert than something you’d pack for lunch. Fresh fruits, and whipped cream combination go well with soft slices of bread, so it tastes like sponge cake filled with whipped cream and fresh fruits.
You can have them with coffee or black tea for tea time or take them on your next picnic. OR put them on the party table or get-together, your family and friends are going to love them and they’ll be gone in no time.
3 Fruit Sando Designs to Try
Today I’ll show you how to make fruit sando with small oranges, kiwis, grapes, and grape tomatoes in three different ways with three unique designs. Make sure to use small sweet oranges to get the perfect cross-section.
To get a perfect cross-section, you need to think about, before you start, how you want to show your cross-section, and then arrange the fruits symmetrically along the lines you plan to cut the sandwich up.
Here are the three designs that we’re going to make today! Aren’t they beautiful?
INGREDIENTS FOR Making FRUIT SANDO
BREAD
Soft fluffy slightly sweetened Japanese White Bread known as Shokupan is preferable but you can also try it with other kinds of soft breads of your choice.
Heavy (whipped) cream
Cream with a high ratio (36% to 45%) of butterfat works best. You need to beat the cream until stiff peaks form. You can also use the ready-to-use cream available. Use light, not-too-sweet whipped cream, so as not to overpower the natural sweetness of the fruit. You can also use cream mixed with cream cheese or mascarpone.
FRUIT
In this recipe, I used oranges, kiwis, red grapes, and grape tomatoes. Make sure to choose sweet small oranges. Feel free to experiment with the fruit combination of your choice. You can also use fruits such as strawberries, bananas, peaches, pineapples, or melons.
Tips to Make the Best Fruit Sando
Preparation
- Whipped cream should be on the firm side but spreadable. If the cream is runny it will be difficult to cut the sandwiches.
- To get a perfect cross-section of the fruit when you cut the sandwich, you need to think about how you want to show your cross-section, and then arrange the fruits along the lines you plan to cut the sandwich later.
Making Sandwich
- Be generous with whipped cream and make sure to put the whipped cream to fill in any gap between fruits.
- Wrap the sandwich with plastic wrap tightly from all four sides to secure the sandwich.
- Mark the cross-section over the plastic wrap with a pen where you’ll need to cut the sandwich with the fruit pattern in the middle.
- Refrigerate the sandwich for about 1 hour or so before cutting, as it will help bind everything together and firm up the whipped cream, making it easier to cut.
- Make sure not to change the orientation of the sandwich.
Cutting
- To get clean cuts, use a sharp clean knife.
- Dip it in hot water and then wipe it with a towel before cutting.
- Make sure to wipe the knife with a warm wet towel after each cut to get a clean cut without a smear of the whipped cream on the fruits.
- I prefer to keep the crust as it helps to keep the sandwiches in shape and I love the bit crunchy texture of the crust.
Serving
- It’s best to enjoy it as soon as possible after you cut it so that it remains more palatable
- If you plan to serve them later, make sure to keep them chilled at all times.
