JAPANESE COFFEE JELLY; With Agar or Gelatin
You can make coffee jelly either with agar (agar-agar) or gelatin.
Agar or agar-agar is a jelly-like substance, extracted from red algae. It is plant-based and vegetarian-friendly. Gelatin is made from animal collagen from skin and bones. So, if you like to make a vegetarian or vegan-friendly version, please use agar.
In this post, I will show you how to make coffee jelly with gelatin. The preparation of coffee jelly with gelatin is slightly different from the agar version. So, I have shared a separate post for making coffee jelly with agar. Click here for the recipe How to make Japanese coffee jelly with agar
USEFUL TIPS FOR MAKING JAPANESE COFFEE JELLY
- I used instant coffee powder, but you can also make jelly with freshly brewed coffee.
- Feel free to adjust the sweetness and bitterness of your coffee jelly according to your preference.
- Make sure to bloom the gelatin with some water in order to hydrate the grains of gelatin.
- You can make the coffee jelly in a baking pan and then cut it into cubes or make coffee jelly in individual glasses.
COFFEE JELLY; Serving Suggestions
There are many ways of serving coffee jelly and it is best served cold. My favorite way to serve coffee jelly is with coconut milk and condensed milk poured on top. You can also mix condensed milk and coconut milk until well combined or you can use them separately. Just feel free to serve it with any type of cream you like, heavy cream, fresh cream, coffee creamer, whipped cream, or even ice cream. You can also add the coffee jelly cubes to any drink you like such as milkshakes, or iced coffee.
FUN FACT ABOUT coffee jelly
The Japanese pronounce coffee jelly as kōhī zeri. The Japanese language does not have the sound ‘F’ and foreign words with ‘F’ gets replaced with ‘H’, and ‘L’ gets replaced with ‘R’. So, coffee is pronounced ‘kōhī‘ and ‘jelly’ is pronounced ‘zeri’. But I am just wondering why they said zeri instead of jeri as there is a “j” in the Japanese alphabet. Probably, the first person who translated the word pronounced it ‘zeri’.
