Japanese Fruit Flower Sandwiches!
Fruit Sando (フルーツサンド) or fruit sandwich is a Japanese-style dessert sandwich. It is made by sandwiching fresh seasonal fruits with whipped cream between slices of soft white bread called shokupan.
A variety of colorful combinations of fruits are arranged on the slightly sweetened whipped cream. They are placed creatively to make a beautiful cross-section when the sandwich is cut in half.
You can have them with coffee or black tea for tea time or take them on your next picnic. OR put them on the party table or get-together. Your family and friends are going to love them. They’ll be gone in no time.
Here is an easy-to-follow recipe with step-by-step pictures. It includes helpful info and tips. These will help you make ‘Japanese Fruit Flower Sandwiches’ in an easy way at home. Do try them out and let me know how it went in the comment section below!

Two Fruit Flower Sandwich Designs to Try
In this recipe, we make sandwiches in two different ways using small kiwi fruit, kiwi slices, strawberries, and grapes.
To get a perfect cross-section, you need to think about how you want to show your cross-section before you start. Then, arrange the fruits symmetrically along the lines you plan to cut the sandwich up.
Here are the two designs that we’re going to make today! Aren’t they beautiful?
Ingredients to Make Fruit Flower Sandwiches
BREAD
Soft, fluffy, slightly sweetened Japanese White Bread called Shokupan is preferable. You can also try it with other kinds of soft bread of your choice.
Heavy (whipped) cream
Cream with a high ratio (36% to 45%) of butterfat works best. You need to beat the cream until stiff peaks form. You can also use the ready-to-use cream available. Use light, not-too-sweet whipped cream, so as not to overpower the natural sweetness of the fruit. You can also use cream mixed with cream cheese or mascarpone.
FRUIT
In this recipe, I used strawberries, kiwis, and red grapes. Feel free to experiment with the fruit combination of your choice. You can also use fruits such as oranges, bananas, peaches, pineapples, or melons.
Tips to Make the Best Fruit Flower Sandwiches
Preparation
- Whipped cream should be on the firm side but spreadable. If the cream is runny it will be difficult to cut the sandwiches.
- To get a perfect cross-section of the fruit when you cut the sandwich, you need to think about how you want to show your cross-section. Then arrange the fruits along the lines you plan to cut the sandwich later.
Making Sandwich
- Be generous with whipped cream and make sure to put the whipped cream to fill in any gap between fruits.
- Wrap the sandwich with plastic wrap tightly from all four sides to secure the sandwich.
- Mark the cross-section over the plastic wrap with a pen. This marks the spot where you’ll need to cut the sandwich. Make sure the fruit pattern is in the middle.
- Refrigerate the sandwich for about 1 hour or so before cutting. This will help bind everything together. It will also firm up the whipped cream, making it easier to cut.
- Make sure not to change the orientation of the sandwich.
Cutting
- To get clean cuts, use a sharp clean knife.
- Dip it in hot water and then wipe it with a towel before cutting.
- Make sure to wipe the knife with a warm wet towel after each cut. This will help you get a clean cut without a smear of the whipped cream on the fruits.
- I prefer to keep the bread crust. It helps to keep the sandwiches in shape. I love the bit crunchy texture of the crust.
Serving
- It’s best to enjoy it as soon as possible after you cut it so that it remains more palatable
- If you plan to serve them later, make sure to keep them chilled at all times.

Make the Sandwiches
Design 1
Gather the ingredients; two bread slices, one small kiwi fruit, a few kiwi slices, and one strawberry. You can use either homemade or ready-to-use whipped cream.
Spread some whipped cream evenly on each side.
- Only on one slice, arrange the kiwi fruit on top of the cream. Add the kiwi slices as shown in the photo below.
- Make sure to place the fruit along the intended diagonal cut line. That’s what will be shown when the sandwich is cut in half.
Add some whipped cream on top of the kiwi slice. Place one strawberry on that as shown in the photo.
Fill in the gaps with more kiwis and with whipped cream. Make sure the tops of the fruits are also covered with the whipped cream.
- Cover with the second slice of bread, facing the whipped cream side down.
- Wrap the sandwich tightly but gently in plastic wrap.
- Use a marker to draw a line on the plastic wrap. This will mark where the intended cut will be. You will know where to cut it later.
- Chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour or so to firm up the cream before slicing.
- When ready to serve, with a very sharp knife slice the crusts off if preferred.
- Then slice where you earlier marked on the plastic wrap.
- If cutting through the plastic is difficult, make a note of the marker line and remove the plastic wrap.
- Make sure to clean the blade with a wet towel before each cut.
You will see the beautiful cross-section! Serve and enjoy!
Design 2
Repeat the process in the design one with the strawberry, kiwi slices, and red grapes.
- Only on one slice, arrange the strawberry and kiwi slices on top of the cream. Refer to the photo below to see the arrangement.
- Make sure to place the fruit along the intended diagonal cut line. This is what will be shown when the sandwich is cut in half.
Add some whipped cream on top of the kiwi slice. Place the two grapes and one kiwi slice on that. Follow the arrangement shown in the photo.
- Cover with the second slice of bread, facing the whipped cream side down.
- Wrap the sandwich tightly but gently in plastic wrap.
- Chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour or so to firm up the cream before slicing.
- Cut in half diagonally!
You will see the beautiful cross-section! Serve and enjoy!
